Thank you, Feng Tian Wei, Li Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu
When Singapore wins nothing at the Olympics, people TALK...

When Singapore wins something, a real something to be reckoned with at the international sporting arena, people TALK too...

"Silver? Silver!? SILVER??? DID YOU JUST SAY SINGAPORE WON A SILVER AT THE OLYMPICS TABLE TENNIS EVENT!??? OH MY GOD! OH MAN OH DUDE!!! THIS IS SUCH A HISTORICAL MOMENT!!!

But wait. Ain't those three people playing our ball MADE IN CHINA?"

Eyebrows start twitching and tongues start wagging.

"Haiyo... So it it's a China VS China game lah..."

Some people rub their heads and go... "Oh oh... remember the opening of the Olympics when all the participating countries marched in with their flags? Li Jia Wei was heralding our flag leh!!! China woman holding onto Singapore flag leh!!! How can???"

and the like.

I do not deny that I belonged to this group of shallow minded and highly nationalistic people.

This round of Olympics really taught me a truckload of things. Lessons in chronological order:
1. I learnt that Feng Tian Wei and Wang Yue Gu are veteran table tennis players.
2. I learnt that the are gonna represent Singapore in the highly coveted games.
3. I straightened out what I know of Li Jia Wei.
i) Yes, she was from China.
ii) She is unliked by quite a handful.
iii) She's called Ice Queen for some reason which I've yet to find out.
iv) It led me to think... how did she get along with Ronald Susilo? One speaks chinese and the
other a smattering of it...
v) She looks like Sammi Cheng :)
vi) There must be something really wrong with her and Ronald.(Because why would two
different breeds get together with little common language and ground and get engaged
then suddenly break off???)
vii) She looks damn cool.
4. Feng Tian Wei is a damn cool person. She's very very very focused in her games and I wanna
emulate her!
5. I have only seen Wang Yue Gu once in the papers and I can't remember how she looks like.
6. The three of them are imported from CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7. and the list goes on and on...

I felt kind of dissapointed that it always has to be foreigners who win the medals for us. If you have any semblance... Singapore's first and only Olympic Silver medal till this year was won by a Singaporean Malaysian.... (Btw, this is another learning point too and oh I saw a recent photograph of him in the ST. He looks a world apart from what he was in the 70s man. You most probably won't believe he won the weight lifting with his now scrawny and slim arms.) And... why do I say Singaporean Malaysian? It's because he was born in Malaysia. Haha.. yep, I was rather perturbed and puzzled as to why we have it's not our indigeneous Singaporeans winning those glittery stuff but foreigners!?

That, I told my dad. Dad replied "Cang Ning, there are no indigeneous Sinagporeans. Your grandparents came from China too!"

and yes I know, yah...yah... we're a rojak country. We're multi faceted. Multi racial. Multi religious. Cosmopolitan. Yeah! Hahah.. but still..

I wasn't to be defeated. I quickly formed my own definition of The Indigeneous Singaporean.
Here goes:

The Indigeneous Singaporean is defined as someone who is born in Singapore, knows Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, The Singapore Flyer and Sentosa. He consumes chicken curry, chicken rice, fish head laksa, rojak, murtabak and mee rebus. The Indigeneous Singaporean also speaks a smattering of all languages available in Singapore and specialises in Singlish. The indigeneous Singaporean is also very motivated to always be the first in queue hence the short form KIASU. The indigeneous Singaporean is also very afraid of falling backward hence the short form KIASI. The indegineous Singaporean above of having taken on the above traits also must demonstrate unity, integrity, racial harmony and progress in all aspects of life. Most of all, they must love the colour white!!! :D (hahah... I'm not liable for anything inferred. =P)

Yeah. I was hoping and hoping some indigeneous one would bring the glory to us... but you know what made me change my narrow mindset on non-us playing for us?

ONE. I saw how Feng Tian Wei played for Singapore.

I was touched.

I was so touched.

Imagine you've been raised in your motherland for about 20 years and you've been given erm...good training attention and facilities to aid you in yoru sporting career. Above that, you have grown attached to the environment, culture, people and way of life there... Then when you play for Singapore, naturally you'll have conflicting emotions. That's what I believe though she claims not in the chinese article today.

You hear..
"traitor traitor!!"

but I think when she played... I heard..
"I'm gonna get the glory for you, Singapore!! I'm gonna get it for you!!"

I think I need not elaborate further. You could really sense sincerity, utmost sincerity and a burning desire to play for our country, Singapore. My stone cold heart warmed up towards her. I thought that she was really really brilliant. Not just her skills at the game but her loyalty, really.
She may have been with us for only two years or so but the way she played really proves alot.

Thank you, really. I really feel like there's no line dividing us now. Thank you so much.

The same went for Li Jia Wei though I was a little critical of her. (She was busy par-tor-ing instead of training for the match mah. and everyone was like going... haiyah... total wash out lah..)

I didn't catch Wang Yue Gu in action ;X

But still, gan xie ni!!!

TWO. Today's chinese article strengthened my resolve to remove all personal barriers on nationalities thereafter. It was an interview with Feng Tian Wei.

ok. Can you please read it yourself? I need the time to do other things than type it out. Hahahah... But really, I felt so ashamed of myself and so proud of her. Young shining star. You can do it! So can all the other athletes who represented us at this year's Olympics!! All of you were FABULOUS! (though I caught none in action except FTW and LJW)

Thank you.. thank you.

Cang Ning
I'm gonna catch the Olympics Closing ceremony!! YAY!!! AS I'M typing this now, I'm in a taxi from Beijing Airport rushing over to catch the ceremony!!!

YAH RIGHT-.-
Haha.. watching it from home. I missed the opening ceremony. Was out with Duane (which was even better I thought, haha). Get prepped for an exhiliarating closing!! If the opening's terrific, this gonna be better!! Why?

LASTING IMPRESSION.
Enjoy.
